What's Happening at the Saban Theatre?

Before the it was re-named the Saban Theatre, the iconic art deco facade that fronted the timeless interior was called the Fox Wilshire. Originally opened on September 19, 1930, the then Fox Wilshire was home to Fox first run features. For the first 50 years, the theatre was considered one of the nation's premiere movie palaces.
Almost every celebrity known to mankind has crossed it's threshold. From Marilyn Monroe to Walt Disney, and from Elvis Presley to Ronald Reagan. The Fox Wilshire premiered "How to Marry a Millionaire" in 1953, Walt Disney's new technology was unveiled in December of that year with "Grand Canyonscope" - the first cartoon in Cinemascope. A few years later, the Fox Wilshire premiered "GI Blues" starring Elvis Presley. In attendance was the future President of the United States - Ronald Reagan. Not to be outdone, "Woodstock" heralded in a new era at the iconic theatre.
In 1981 the Wilshire Theatre was renovated and converted to a stage venue. For a number of years, the venue has hosted numerous theater productions and concerts including Billy Idol, Laurie Anderson, Mijares, Richard Pryor, Spandau Ballet, and other world class acts. The National Ballet of Spain performed on its stage.
The elaborate Spanish Art Deco structure was designed by noted theatre architect Simeon Charles Lee. This was his 3rd theatre design, after the Tower Theatre and the Los Angeles Theatre, both in Los Angeles The Fox Wilshire was one of the first of Lee's Art Deco designs. The Art Deco style auditorium was designed by Harold B. Franklin.
Now the theatre carries the Saban brand. In 2009 it was announced that Haim and Cheryl Saban would donate five million dollars for the restoration of the proscenium, orchestra area, and marquee. Thus began the Saban Theatre, now home to Beverly Hills Temple of the Arts at the Saban Theatre.
